Does the upcoming information sound like the knee pain scenario you have to endure?

You do not enjoy going to the movies. You avoid long car rides. You dread sitting at your desk at work to finish an important assignment.

Why? - Is it that you're anti-social, or dislike travel, or hate your job?

No! It is your knee ache when sitting. When you sit in one spot for too long, your knees start to ache and throb. The pain problems can become more problematic the longer you sit, until you can't put up with it anymore. But the bright side is that you do not have to put up with it anymore. The relief you've been looking for could be something as simple as a low profile, light weight knee brace. Here's why...

A lot of people may think that knee pain occurs only with activity. This is a mistaken assumption. Knee pain when sitting can be a standard problem for many people. - Maybe you can relate.

Knee aches when sitting is typically felt in the front of the knee, in the area of the kneecap (patella). Generally, this type of pain is caused by the compression of the patella and the cartilage underneath. Normally, when the knee is bent, the pressure against the kneecap (caused by the pulling of the attached muscles and tendons), increases.

Over time, knee ache when sitting can be felt, especially if the patella is not sitting exactly as it should within the femoral groove. The knee pain problems may worsen the longer you are in a seated position. This type of pain (called patellofemoral pain syndrome), may occur in one knee or both. Still, while this condition is a common cause of knee pain problems while sitting, it may not be the exact cause of your particular pain, and it is always wise to have your condition evaluated by a qualified physician.

In the meantime, while your symptoms might be partially relieved by taking a break from your sitting position, or by icing the knees while sitting, it would be preferable to prevent the knee ache while sitting from occurring altogether. A knee support can be the thing to help you do this.

A well designed knee brace can help provide your knee joint with meaningful support. When used properly, a support can help relieve the pressure on the knee cap as it is rests in the femoral groove while you are sitting. A knee brace may also help keep the patella properly aligned within the femoral groove, thus helping to relieve the ache caused by the compression when sitting.

When you notice that resting your knee just won't cure the problem, it may be time to move up to a knee brace. Six months from now, you will look back to now and wonder what you did without a knee brace.

My problem is a knee ache, as opposed to knee pain. The symptomology described above sounds very much like mine. This has bothered me for about 30 years, becoming worse and more frequent over time. Knee braces do nothing for it. Exercise no longer relieves it. In fact, the only relief I get is with hydrocodone or oxycodone. I'd just as soon not have to deal with these drugs, if there is anything less powerful that will relieve the ache.

No medical practitioner I have ever talked to over the last 30 years has been able diagnose or treat this problem. I have tried many ways to relieve this ache, from anti inflammatories, snapping the joints, stationary biking, walking, and on and on. Nothing but the narcotics relieves it. I have seen an orthopedist most recently, but he has no clue about it, either.

What is this ache, and more importantly, what can I do about it?

One of the most common miss diagnosis is Rheumatoid Arthritis. I would definitley get a second opinion. I had a friend who had the same problem for many years. And they told her it could be several different things. Until she saw this last doctor who actually new what they were talking about. I work in the medical field and i see this all to often. So i know what you are talking about. Get another opinion and ask about testing for Rheumatiod Arthritis. Good luck to you if you still haven't found answers to this point.

Im 17 and i have this very same problem I also play organized basketball and ive been told that it could also be growing pains can this also be true do to my age?

It sounds like you might have a sports injury. With the amount of vigorous jumping in the game of basketball, you may of actually torn something in your knee. Did you ever have testing done where they surgically insert a micro-camera into your knee? Sometimes things don't always show up on MRI's, CT scans and Ultra Sounds or even x-rays. So talk with your doctor about that. That might be an option for you to think about if your having alot of issues with that.

I'm 28 and I have the same symptoms as listed above. I was told it was growing pains as well, not true. I saw a Dr. years ago who told me it was due to different lengths of my legs...I don't buy it. I think Doctors just can't figure out what's wrong. I'm up for trying the leg brace solution above in hopes it may work... Does anyone else with this problem hyper-extend your legs when standing?

All the symptoms listed above, now it's getting worse, has anyone tried a knee brace yet? Let me know if you have tried one and if it has provided relief. - George

This describes my problem accurately. Yes, very helpful! Why does a knee brace help? What causes the problem?

My knees begin to ache while sitting, but feel fine after standing up and moving around for a very short period of time. Once I am up and about, the problem goes away. However, getting up from a chair can be difficult.

The problem is you have these pads in your knees and when you sit for periods of time or go from a sitting to a standing position or even go up and down stairs, that padding can ware and tare. Causing pain. When the ware and tare occurs your bones/joints will rub against eachother. It can be very painful sometimes. And sometimes when your walking your knee will feel like it wants to give out or lock. There are treatments the doctors can do to help you heal otherwise it could result in surgery. And after surgery you would have to go through Physical Therapy and all of this could take any where from 6 months to 1 year depending on your age and the severity of the injury.

I have the same ache, but usually from change in weather, and most commonly sitting in an air conditioned room. I use a thermoskin on my knee, and not only is it comfortable, the ache goes away, and after laying awake many nights in pain, I can sleep soundly. Any body else feel sensitive to hot and cold? This sounds like Arthritis. Where-ever it aches i bet it tends to swell and get hot to the touch. I can't say specifically but there are a few different types of arthritis. And testing is the only way to tell what kind and then the doctor can start your rehabilitation process. And unfortunitley not always curable but managable.

I have a knee ache and before I try a knee brace I am going to try calcuim. When I was young my knees would ache because I was low on calcuim. Medically it isn't proven but it worked in the past.

Nice to know others share this weird problem -- after 25 years & now some arthritis in the knee, I finally got referred to a rheumatologist & am being tested for 2 possible causes (CPPD & runner's knee). In either case, it is something that I wish I had done something about before the damage in my knee was as bad as it now is. I may need a knee replacement because I ignored these symptoms for so long (caused by deposits either under the kneecap or in the joint -- depending on which condition is confirmed) Do something while you still have your mobility & keep it!)

Have experienced the same problem and recently read about how dehydration and low potassium can cause knees to ache. Have increased my water intake and potassium (eating a couple of bananas daily) and have noticed a decrease in pain. Hope this helps!!!

I have the same symptoms as mentioned along with pain when I do finally extend my knee. I'm 24 and in shape. I also often have a clicking sound whenever I extend my knees also. This all started in iraq doing convoys stuck in a seat for 12 to 18 hours at a time with little movement available. The pain has intensified it the past couple weeks but it has only been about 10 months since returning from iraq.
